My nephew sent me this from Sydney, some people do not have much respect for the sea.

Cheers,

Gordon

(This guy decided to commence a passage from Southport (on Australia's Gold Coast) north to Yeppoon yesterday. The forecast was for seas 9 to 10 mtrs. There was a storm warning out and the wind at the time had been recorded at 68 kts at the seaway - just under hurricane force. He attempted to go out the Seaway at 3pm yesterday. The engine apparently failed as the yacht was launched. The guy and his crew somehow managed to turn back into the Seaway, unfurl some of the genoa and sail back in. The police welcomed them back into port. Charges may be laid!

This is the exit of a inlet heading out to the ocean proper.  They made the choice to have a go, it was not something they were unlucky to be in. Really amazing they didn't get rolled and lose the rig, keel and some lives.)

Brydes or Minke whale following "Mini Me"  ( Thanks to Ernie for the Pictures)

Umoya and Mini Me took part in the Gordons Bay Yacht Club, Commodore's Dash Race to False Bay Yacht Club on Saturday 18th April 2009.  Go to the GBYC web site: (http://www.gbyc.co.za/sailing_events.htm#Commodores_Dash_Race_to_FBYC_on_Saturday_18th_April_2009) for more detail and read about "Big Little" a Kelkiewyn that had an incident with a whale.

We took part in the Simons Town race and had an enjoyable crossing on Saturday averaging 4 knots. Coming back on Sunday, because of no wind, we had to motor all the way. This whale followed us for about four hours. The whale even touched the boat at one stage. It was a nerve-racking, memorable day with this huge whale.

Please add StaSea to your list! She is sail #158 based here in Pte Desny, Mauritius and owned by myself (Dave Vanderbanck) and Gavin Harwood-Nash. We bought her in Cape town in Nov 1999 and had her shipped to Mauritius where we are pilots - having lived here for the last 18 years. She has been the perfect boat for these lagoon and coastal waters and we have lots of good things to say and stories to tell! There are only two Holiday23's here in Mauritius- the other one being "Celine". Just wanted to advise you where #158 was and will send more pics and info later. Thanks for the great website.

Best Regards,

Dave Vanderbanck and Gavin Harwood-Nash

From: Helmut Klein

I sold my Holiday early 2007. I took on an additional position in our group for which I had to spend a lot of time in the UK. I did not have time for sailing anymore. Further I built a Stadt 34 in steel since 2002 which put a lot of pressure on my time. At present I am still commuting between SA and the UK but plan to ease out of this towards the middle of the year.

The Stadt is now at a Vaal Dam yard for completion and I hope to get her on the water before the end of the year. My plan is to do a bit more extensive sailing in the Indian Ocean from next year on.
Once this is over, I will get another Holiday for sure.

The Holiday 23 was fantastic and much more capable a  boat than I ever expected when I bought her. When sailing the Round the Island race on the Vaal last month on a Mistral, my heart bled whenever a Holiday sailed by. Attached pic. drying out at Inhaca Island Maputo.

Best Regards
Helmut

Martinique sailing along on a lazy day.

This last weekend Christelle and I had a good calm sail with our Companion Holiday 34 owned by Mossie Basson to our usual Breakfast at the Slipway restaurant in Saldanha.  However on the way back we had a very wet and rough sail with the wind gusting to 30 kts. Lekker!! Martinique behaving herself admirably as usual. When we sail in Formation we normally only use our gennies for easier manoeuvring. These pics were taken by Mossie of us on the way to Saldanha.

Budgie Burgers Writes:

Had a very good sail on Saturday in 20-25Kt SE winds. Sea swell was at 3.5 M which made it hard work with full genie and main. Yesterday was a casual day in the bay as the winds were nearly non existent.
