Sad story from the Vaaldam.

Last Friday 1 May I had breakfast with another sailor friend - Hans Simon.  The week before I broke my tiller arm and since his holiday (Conistan) was in drydock for repairs I borrowed his.

We went out sailing around the isle at about 11:00 with a nice moderate wind. Hans took his other sail boat, a little no-name 16 footer, out in the same direction. I carried on to the converence where the Wilge flows into the Vaal river. Got a speed of 8.4 knots. Wind started to get stronger so we went into a first reef and started on our way back to Anchor Creek Marina where we moor.

At about 1530 just past the Island, Anchor Creek phoned us and told us to drop sails - 45 knot wind went through Deneysville. As we dropped the wind struck us. We motored back to behind the island.  Hans must have been about 3 km in front of us. He told the guys at Anchor Creek (they phoned him as well) that he is coming into the harbour.

He never arrived.  It is now 4 days later and no sign of anything. Hans will be missed. He was 58 years old and sailed for more than 30 years.

We have now been sailing only since January 2009.  One thing we learned is to respect the dam. The longer we sail the more cautious we get. We were lucky not to suffer any damage or injuries.

One of the things we do in Gordon's Bay, except for racing, cruising, casual sailing is to also catch a few crayfish.
